The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit, the period of eight days and nine nights has its importance and is divided into sets of three days to worship three different aspects of the supreme goddess.
For the first three days the goddess is regarded as a spiritual force called Durga also known as Kali in order to destroy all our impurities.
Second three days are devoted to the goddess Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth.
Final three days are spent in worshipping the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati.
In order to have all-round success in life, believers seek the blessings of all three aspects of the divine femininity, hence the nine nights of worship.Apart from the Navratri in September – October, there are three other Navratris in a year. The Chaitra Navratri or the Navaratri in March-April, also known as Vasant Navratri or Ram Navaratr. Therefore,scientifically and spiritually one should follow certain basic rules of Do's and Don't during this time in order to harvest blessings from Goddess for a peaceful and happy and successful life. |
Do's
- Have a bath daily in the morning before offering prayer.
- Keep yourself clean by wearing neat and clean clothes. Though one should keep himself/herself clean everyday but on the days of Navratras, devotees ought to be more particular about cleanliness.
- Eat only Satvic Food once in day.
- Offer some home made food ,milk ,fruits to God everyday.
- Visit temple or do puja at home in the morning and evening by lighting lamps,offering flowers and performing arti.
- Provide gifts to at least two small girls everyday.
- Recite the mantras, slokas of Maa at every available time.
- Pray to goddess to clean your past karmic account and make your mind free from ego,jealousy,selfishness and other negative traits.
- Do not cut your nails/hair for all these days.
- Do not eat bitter or non vegetarian food.
- Do not stitch or knit during this period.
- Do not gossip, tell lies or use harsh words/curse others.
- Try not to use leather items during these nine days.
- Do not leave the Jyot to burn it out. After puja you should, with some flowers put to rest the Agni which stood as the witness to your puja and offering.
- Do not dirty your home specially Puja Room/Kitchen. Keep it clean and full of positive energy
- If possible do not wear slippers for all these 9 days or avoid getting into the puja room wearing one.
- Refrain from sexual relations during this period.
- Do not study anything on the 9th day; instead you should keep all your books and other modern gadget near the MAA and seek her blessing on this day and then on Vijay Dashami day you should take them and read sitting before MAA.
Follow these simple rules to avail the blessings from Maa Durga.One should perform all rites and rituals of navratras with honesty and pure heart to make Goddess happy and if Maa Durga would be happy then growth,prosperity,happiness will definitely knock your door.
